If an image is shown against a white background it doesn't matter if this pixel is bright and opaque - or dark and half-transparent. This makes it possible to make the paper of for example a pencil drawing transparent.

This gimp-plug-in was designed as another way to create images with transparent background for www.physikbuch.de.
The idea was that bright opaque pixels can be replaced by transparent, but fundamentally darker pixels without changing the appearance of the images they are part of - if the image is shown against a white background.
In other words: This plug-in replaces the brightness of the pixels of an image by the corresponding transparency.
